Autobiography

My name is Emily Messer and I’m originally from the rolling hills of Southeast Missouri. Three years ago, I moved to Missoula to pursue my passion for storytelling and study journalism. I recently earned my B.A. in Journalism from the University of Montana and I’m now reporting for the Lake County Leader.

Writing

From a young age, I’ve had an eye for storytelling. In middle and high school, I filled journals with poetic and creative details. When I enrolled in the journalism program, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But once I grasped the structure of hard news, it was full steam ahead.

I embraced every story with a creative perspective, eager to find angles that others might overlook. Along the way, I dove into photojournalism and advanced writing courses, which expanded my skills and deepened my craft. My role at the Montana Kaimin became a turning point—challenging me to refine, grow, and truly drive my storytelling forward.

I approach each story with a fact-based personal account that drives a deep angle of consciously understandable news. I strive to captivate the audience on overlooked topics to spark change.

Work Style

My style is portrait photography and capturing the candid moments with unique natural and artificial lighting.
