Autobiography
My name is Emily Messer and I am originally from rolling hills of Southeast Missouri. I moved to Missoula three years ago to study journalism and conservation. I am currently finishing up my BA in journalism at the University of Montana.
Writing
From a young age, I’ve always had an eye for storytelling. Throughout my middle school and high school career, I kept journals of my life experiences that I often infused with poetic and creative flairs. But it wasn’t until much later in life that I fully recognized my passion for writing. Enrolling in the journalism program, I was unsure what to expect. Quickly I learned the format of hard news and once I had that down, it was full steam ahead. I tackled every story that came my way with a creative, fresh and different angle. I started exploring photo classes and harder writing courses and then gained my job at the Montana Kaimin, where I was able to push, develop and drive my storytelling abilities.
I approach each story with a fact-based personal account that drives a deep angle of consciously understandable news. I strive to captivate the audience on overlooked topics to spark change.
Work Style
My style is portrait photography and capturing the candid moments with unique natural and artificial lighting.
